Treat the remnant's emission as a three-dimensional (x, y, E) cube. Every X-ray instrument slices it into resolution cells of different shapes: some fine in space and coarse in energy, others the reverse. RGS is the most unusual — it couples energy and the y direction onto a single coordinate.
